Linguix: Linguix is another one of our favorite proofreading software solutions. It is less expensive than Grammarly and may become the Top Choice once it matures further. If you are mostly looking for grammar suggestions, and also are interested in advanced security features, Linguix is the way to go.

Outlining Tools

Dynalist: An outliner that enables you to take an infinite amount of notes nested within each other. This is our favorite outlining software for doing research and organizing themes because it is very easy to move your ideas around, and take notes in a variety of ways. You can even write equations in Latex and can export your notes to OPML format for ultimate flexibility. If you have used WorkFlowy before, it is similar, and you can even import your notes from WorkFlowy. Dynalist is excellent for synthesizing concepts from a literature review.

Mendeley: Mendeley is a free, web-based application that inspires you to be more productive with your research and writing. It lets you store, organize and search all your references from just one library, seamlessly insert references and bibliographies into your Microsoft Word documents, read, highlight and annotate PDFs, and keep all your thoughts across multiple documents in one place. Use Mendeley to collaborate with others by sharing references and ideas. We highly recommend Mendeley for reference management.
